What To Take When Viewing Apartments
Many communities require identification to view their apartments for security reasons. Be sure to bring a valid photo ID, preferably a driver’s license, state ID or passport. We will provide you with multiple listings, so it’s a good idea to bring a camera & notebook along with you on your visits. It may also be helpful to have measurements of any furniture you’ll be taking with you, so you know if it will fit in your new apartment.
What You’ll Need To Apply For An Apartment
- Checkbook – for application fees/deposit (some also take credit cards)
- Paystub or other proof of income for up to the past 8 weeks OR letter of new hire from your employer (letterhead) with stated salary
- Rental history & landlord contact info
Application Fees/Deposit
- Average application fee (credit check): $30-80, non-refundable
- Some charge an administrative fee to process paperwork: $100 – $300, non-refundable
- Security deposits vary. This is security to the landlord, in case of damage to the apartment. Refundable at the end of the lease, minus any deductions for repairs / restoration. Some communities charge up to two months’ deposit; others don’t charge any. The average security deposit runs about $500
Income Requirements
Generally, rental properties ask that your gross monthly income (pre-tax) be approximately three times the market rent of the unit desired. Income should be verified by presenting paystubs for up to two months prior. Some locations may be able to research your income by calling your employer.
